Asger Sylvest Ravn

I was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1943, and,
since early childhood, the act of drawing and
creating forms and figures has never failed to
intrigue me.

At age sixteen I considered working as an
engraver, designing and forming cutlery, etc.
After the four year apprenticeship, I worked as
an engraver for two years, but by this time I
had discovered I had a voice, I could sing.

I wondered if, maybe, with good teachers and
hard work I might audition for work in a theatre
either in Denmark or in Sweden.

The decision made, I went abroad to Vienna and
when I returned six months later, to my joy, I
was offered a contract at Malmö Stadsteater.

I worked at Malmö Stadsteater from 1972 until
2007, and all through the years, sketching as
well as clay and stone sculpting have been a
constant and vital backdrop in life.

However, in the mid-nineties I began working
with steel-mesh, having been inspired by the
work of the late Swedish sculptress, Barbro
Bäckström, and it is chiefly the work with
steel-mesh that engages me, at least for the
present.

I have shown some of my pieces in galleries
here in Malmö, in Denmark, Tomelilla and
Tommarp.
